Instructions for use of Kinesiology Strip
Kinesiology tape, also known as Kinesiology strip, is a therapeutic elastic tape used to support muscles and joints, reduce pain, and aid in recovery. It is commonly used in sports medicine, physical therapy, and rehabilitation.
Here's a general guide on how to use Kinesiology tape:
1. Prepare the Skin
- Clean the area: Make sure the skin is clean and free from oils, lotions, or sweat. This ensures the tape sticks well.
- Shave if necessary: If the area is particularly hairy, you may want to shave the skin for better adhesion.
- Dry the skin: Make sure the area is completely dry before applying the tape.
2. Cut the Tape
Cut the tape to the appropriate length for the area you're targeting. You can cut it into strips or use pre-cut strips designed for specific areas (e.g., knee, shoulder).
If you're cutting your own, round the corners to prevent the tape from peeling.
3. Round the Edges
If you've cut the tape yourself, round off the edges with scissors to avoid peeling and discomfort.
4. Application Techniques (varies depending on the condition you're treating)
- Apply anchor (no stretch): The first part of the tape should be applied with no stretch. This part anchors the tape to the skin. Make sure to apply it smoothly.
- Stretching the Tape: Apply the tape with the appropriate level of stretch based on the condition. The tape is designed to stretch up to 50% of its original length.
- For muscle support: Stretch the tape while applying it along the length of the muscle.
- For joint support: Apply the tape around the joint in a specific pattern (e.g., "Y" or "I" shapes) to provide support.
- End without stretch: Finish applying the tape at the end of the strip with no stretch, ensuring it sticks properly.
5. Rub the Tape
After application, rub the tape gently with your hand. This activates the adhesive, ensuring that it sticks well to the skin and that the tape conforms to the contours of the body.
6. Wear and Care
- Wear time: Kinesiology tape can typically be worn for up to 3-5 days, even during showers or exercise. the duration will depend on how well it adheres to your skin and the intensity of your activity.
- Avoid lotions and oils: These can reduce the tape’s adhesion.
- Remove carefully: When removing the tape, do so slowly and carefully to avoid skin irritation. If you feel discomfort during removal, you can use baby oil or adhesive remover to make the process smoother.
Example Applications:
- Knee pain: Apply the tape from the lower part of the knee, across the patella (knee cap), and around the upper leg, either in a “Y” or “I” pattern for support.
- Shoulder support: Use a "Y" or "X" pattern to support the shoulder and reduce strain on the muscles and joints.
Tips:
If the tape causes irritation, remove it immediately.
Make sure to consult a healthcare provider if you're unsure of the correct application for a particular injury.
